How to check GLP-1 coverage with Aetna

Process guidance only — this page does not say whether Aetna covers Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound on your plan.

Aetna is a CVS Health company. Pharmacy benefits are often administered with CVS Caremark, but the number on your ID card is the one that can see your specific plan.

No database knows your contract.

Formularies differ by employer, state, Medicare vs. commercial, and PBM carve-out. The only reliable answer is the number on your ID card plus a written prior-auth decision.

How prior authorization usually works here

  1. Call the Member Services number on your ID card — not a general Aetna marketing line — and ask them to look up your specific formulary.
  2. Ask whether the drug is covered for your diagnosis (type 2 diabetes vs. obesity/weight management vs. another FDA indication). Aetna does not publish one national yes/no for GLP-1s that applies to every employer, Medicare, or individual plan.
  3. If they say it is on formulary, ask the tier, your estimated copay/coinsurance, whether prior authorization is required, and whether step therapy or quantity limits apply.
  4. Ask your prescriber’s office to submit prior authorization electronically when required. Aetna’s provider materials point offices to Availity, CoverMyMeds, or Aetna Pharmacy Management rather than a member-completed form.
  5. If the request is denied, ask Member Services for the denial reason in writing and how to file an appeal or formulary exception. Then ask the clinic’s prior-auth staff to resubmit with the missing documentation.

Phone numbers and portal names are taken from Aetna's public contact pages linked above. They change, and they are not a substitute for the number printed on your ID card. This page does not make coverage claims for any GLP-1 medication.
